Directions to Montauk

Airports in NYC and Long Island:
Flying into New York City you have two major options, Laguardia (LGA) and Kennedy (JFK) airports. They are both on Long Island but "up-island" near the city in different parts of Queens, a good two-and-a-half to three hour drive from Montauk and about a 30/45 minute cab ride from Manhattan. Halfway out on the island is Islip MacArthur Airport (ISP). Islip is definitely a smaller airport but may give some of you another option. Islip is about an hour-and-a-half drive from Montauk.

All airports offer car rentals and ultimately driving is your best option. We will offer transportation between Montauk Village and Gurney's for the wedding on Sunday but for the rest of the time to really see all that the east end has to offer you are going to be happiest to have your own set of wheels. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) can be taken from the city east to Montauk but connecting from any of the above airports to the LIRR is not necessarily so easy. JFK offers an AirTrain service that gets you to Jamaica Station (the main hub of the LIRR) and you can take the Montauk branch out from there. Islip is only near the Ronkonkoma LIRR Station that does not offer train service out to Montauk. From Islip or Laguardia to a viable LIRR station you would have to take a cab and it can be costly. If you definitely want to avoid renting a car then taking a bus (Hampton Jitney) from any of the airports is an option, more train and bus info is below.

Directions by Car:
Montauk is approximately 120 miles from New York City. From New York City, Laguardia or JFK take the Long Island Expressway (I-495) Eastbound towards Eastern Long Island. Take exit #70 - CR111 (Manorville). Off the ramp turn right onto CR111 South, you will see most people are going the same way. Drive until it ends (about 4.6 miles). Make the left turn and merge onto Route 27 East. After roughly 15 miles or so 27-East becomes a smaller two lane road that continues through local villages all the way out to Montauk. You will pass the car dealerships in Southampton, come to an intersection and turn left to stay on 27. Continue through Watermill, Bridgehampton, Wainscott, East Hampton (where you will have to make another left turn to stay on 27 before the town pond), and Amagansett. After Amagansett you will be on a long sandy stretch (the Napeague Stretch) and you are almost there. To go straight to Montauk village stay on Montauk Hwy, Rte 27. If you are going to Gurney's or want the more curvy scenic route along the ocean then take Old Montauk Highway to the right when the road forks. Either way in a few miles congratulations! You have made your way to Montauk.

Directions by Train:
From New York City east the train option is the Long Island Railroad. Go to the LIRR website for all train info. From Penn Station in Manhattan the trip is about 3 hours and you will have to transfer in Jamaica. Jamaica is the LIRR hub where the Montauk branch originates so from the city, JFK airport or the outer boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens you inevitably go through Jamaica station. Only a couple trains a day typically go all the way out to Montauk so check timetable info for the day of the week you are considering. If possible buy train tickets from a machine or LIRR rep before boarding to avoid additional charges. The Montauk LIRR train station is north of Montauk Village so you will have to take a short cab ride to the motels in Montauk Village.

Directions by Bus:

A slightly more expensive option than the LIRR, the Hampton Jitney is the main Hamptons bus service that can take you from the eastside of Manhattan or neighboring airports right to the village of Montauk. Go to or give them a call at (631) 283-4600 to find out fares, schedules and specifics about airport connections.

Cab Services once in Montauk:
Lindy's Taxi - (631) 668-8888
Pink Tuna Taxi - (631) 668-3838
